About 260 people came to Stanford for enjoyable orienteering on a pleasant Spring day. In addition, participants were able to take in the attractions of Stanford's annual Community Day event.
The White course was a bit more challenging than normal, requiring careful navigation through a maze of buildings, roads, and paths on the campus. However, nearly everyone completed the course successfully (one group may have succumbed to Community Day), with the group of first- timers(?) David Coughlan and Scott Himmelberger finishing first in a quick 13:20; a few minutes ahead of the group of Betty Wong, David Pierce, and Neil Geraghty at 17:54.
The Yellow course started and finished similar to the White course, but had longer legs and looped through the more open areas north of the central campus, providing a bit more challenging route selection -- and more Community Day activities to get through. The course was won by first-timer Dennis Wilkinson with a swift 17:56, well ahead of Bill Rassieur in second at 28:09. Dennis and his wife Melissa (who completed the White course with a baby stroller) came to the event because they happened to see the directional signs. What is the saying about it pays to "advertise"?
The Score-O events, which used the same map, offered more distance and lots of route choice among the buildings and outlying areas of the campus. There were so many controls scattered around the campus that people had real challenges to decide the order in which to visit controls and which ones to skip. Those challenges were enhanced by the "severe" penalty of 2 points per minute (or fraction) overtime.
The 40-minute Score O was won by veteran Mike Fleishman, who came in 1:20 early with 22 controls "punched". Stanford student Misha Lipatov was second with 21 controls, having given away nearly three minutes. The top four finishers averaged about 1:50 per control, pointing out the disadvantage of finishing minutes early. The top ten finishers were safely under the time limit -- too safely perhaps, because they averaged almost 3 minutes early.
In the 60-minute Score O, Mark Prior and Steve Gregg showed that it was possible to visit all the controls under the time limit, with respectively 3:40 and 2:17 to spare. (Their averages were 1:31 and 1:34 per control.) Mike Prindiville also visited all the controls, but suffered a 2-point reduction for being 24 seconds late. That dropped him from third to fifth -- behind Matthias Kohler and Doug Bass, both of whom got "only" 35 controls. Many of the top finishers came in within a minute of the time limit, but those on the wrong side of the limit lost several places.
On a lighter note, the following people deserve honorable mention: Rory Maclean for completing the White course on his own (with a shadow) at age 5. Emily Kellison-Linn and five of her friends for making the event part of Emily's birthday celebration. Doug Bass for completing the Yellow course quickly as a Memory O (after running the Score O). The Score-O team of Toby Zimmerer and Joe Sarti for finishing 1 second under the 60-minute limit. And Jim Fish for having the determination to maximize his fun by getting all the Score-O controls regardless of the time.
As always, the event couldn't have been held without the efforts of many people -- before and at the event. Natasha Gelfand ran the gauntlet of Stanford bureaucracy to get the permit, with support by Audrie Faist. Meg Gerstner designed the courses, with help from Alan Glendinning. Alan also provided valuable guidance to the Event Director, made map corrections and prepared the maps for printing, and set many of the controls. As usual, many thanks go to Bob Cooley for printing all the maps, and for being prepared to print more maps at the event (although that turned out not to be needed despite the large turnout [hurrah!]).
Alan, Meg, Cheryl Madson, and Nancy Lindeman helped with setup. The ever-present registration team of Ev and Jean Beuerman did their usual wonderful job, with help by Esther Heller. Beginners clinics were held by Nancy Lindeman and Jim Fish, which surely contributed to the high level of success on White and Yellow. Starts were handled by Cheryl Madson, Misha Lipatov, Natasha Gelfand, Terry Farrah, and Bob Strauss. Meg and Steve Haas recorded finish times. Alan, Marsha Jacobs, and Nick Corsano computed the results. Last but not least, Meg, Alan, and Steve Haas kindly stayed until the end to clean up and pick up the controls.
Thanks to all those folks, to Van Boughner for posting the announcement, results, and this write-up on the BAOC Web site, and to anyone who I've inadvertently overlooked.
In closing, I'll mention that mixed opinions were expressed about having the event on the same day as Stanford's Community Day. Some people thought that added a lot of interest to the day, but others felt that it interfered with their orienteering. I would appreciate hearing from people who have an opinion one way or the other, so we can consider what to do next year.
