Sierra 2000 O-Fest

Junior Training Camp

Contact: Gary Kraght, 415-383-4429

All juniors have an opportunity this summer to participate in the Junior Training Camp being held as part of the Sierra 2000 O-Fest at Northstar-at-Tahoe. The training camp begins at 2 p.m., Wednesday, August 2 at Northstar, after the morning Sawmill Flat A-meet. It continues through Friday, August 4 - and don't forget the Pacific Region Championships and A-meet on August 5-6. So juniors can get 5 solid days of orienteering training, fun, and A-meet experience!

Your instructors will be Rick Worner, Jeff Saegar, Miki and Peter Snell, and Gavin Wyatt-Mair. Rick is a former USOF president and has led many junior training camps and junior orienteering trips to other countries. Jeff is the coach of the U.S. Junior team. Miki and Peter are both former top runners, and Peter is an Olympic gold medalist. Gavin, originally from South Africa, created and has directed BAOC's annual Scout-O event for many years.

The training camp will be held in the daytime. I'm not sure exactly what Rick, Jeff, and company have in mind, but expect a great combination of physical training, mental challenges, and fun! For the evenings, juniors are officially on their own. However, there will be fun events at the USOF convention site each evening. For those juniors not staying at Northstar with parents, we have reserved a number of camping spaces at Donner Memorial State Park.

Juniors can participate in all USOF convention activities for only $10, which includes the junior training camp. For those juniors who wish to camp at Donner Memorial State Park with the group, there will be a $25 camping fee. Rick Worner will be traveling with a group of juniors and will be camping at the park from the preceding Friday evening, July 28. Since there is a B-meet in the area that weekend (another two days of Tahoe orienteering!), any early birds are welcome to join in the camping fun. Please let Rick know (wornerkohnaol.com) by the beginning of July if you intend to come and camp early.

I hope to see lots of juniors at the training camp this summer. Everyone is welcome, as long as you can at a minimum complete a White course on your own without help. You'll be training with some of our country's best coaches, and having loads of fun with other friendly juniors from all over the country!
