President Steve Haas called the meeting to order at 1:02 PM.
President's Report
Steve commented on the BAOC juniors currently competing in Europe. Julia Doubson and Katie Petersen are competing at the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) in Finland, and both along with Sarah Petersen participated in the (women's) Venla relay (also in Finland). Sarah and Julia also participated in the Jukola relay ("men's" counterpart to Venla), and Julia competed at the World Orienteering Championships (WOC) in Estonia.
It was also noted that "orienteer" was the answer to 11 down in the July 8 New York Times crossword puzzle, marking a key milestone in the acceptance of the sport in popular culture.
Steve also shared a book (in Norwegian) with an article on Mikkel Conradi, and with commentary on BAOC and orienteering in the U.S. in general.
Officer Election
Dan Greene, chair of the nominating committee, announced the slate proposed by the committee and approved by the Board, and requested nominations from the floor. As there were no contested positions, the following slate was approved by voice vote.
- President – Steve Haas
- Event Coordinator – George Minarik
- Treasurer – Sharon Evans
- Secretary – Vicki Woolworth
Other Business
Newly-elected Event Coordinator George Minarik explained the newly-organized group responsible for event coordination, with five Regional Event Coordinators (REC) working as a team. Each REC will recruit event directors and course setters for their area, with the goal of getting the 2018 schedule sketched out by this fall.
- George Minarik – South Bay REC (and team lead)
- Scott Aster – North Bay REC
- Marie-Josée Parayre – East Bay REC
- Deron van Hoff – San Francisco and Sierra REC
- Graham Brew – Peninsula and East Bay REC
Jay Hann asked for comments on the new position of Permit Coordinator. Preliminary feedback was positive.
Steve Haas reviewed the recent Strategic Planning Session, and noted the progress being made on some of the objectives. François Léonard shared his group's proposal for marketing, that in addition to event-related boosts on Facebook, the club also use Facebook frequently to promote membership. An additional suggestion was to encourage club members to like, share, and repost club activities to reach a wider audience.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:25 PM.
