Event Write-Up
By
Gone are the days when the Event Director also had to
- 1. Pay park fees up front,
- 2. Set & vet courses,
- 3. Make a master of hand-written map corrections to be copied,
- 4. Hand draw a set of master courses for participants to copy onto their blank maps (on the clock),
- 5. Man the starts & finishes,
- 6. Collect all the controls,
- 7. Check punch cards for correct pin punches,
- 8. Calculate each person's time by hand from Start & Finish times (calculators couldn't subtract hours & minutes), and
- 9. Take home a string of results tabs to prepare a write-up over a period of days while double-checking each result.
These days we have a lot more help, both people-wise & electronic, so you can get your results and event write-up the same day as the event. We had only five weeks to set up this event, and the current BAOC procedures, materials, and people made it possible for this to work.
Over 130 people came out to enjoy a perfect day for running in Sunol: clear skies, temperature in the low 70's, the ground soft from previous days' rain, which had the added benefit of scaring away a horseback riding group that would have competed for parking space and trails.
Sunol's steep, open terrain makes it tough to design challenging, runnable courses, but course setters Damian Swift (advanced) and Gary Carpenter (WYO) came through, as shown by the winning times of close to 1 hour for nearly all the longer courses, and very few DNFs.
Ian Swift was true to his name, winning the White course by a wide margin; his Dad supposedly shadowing could hardly keep up. His also-Swift brother Fillan took the Yellow course in similar fashion. Denis Kourakin won the Orange course by less than a minute over Christine Brew, who was on her second (non-overlapping) course (oaky, Dennis Wilkinson had the fastest time on Orange, but that's way out of his class).
Gavin Williams won the Brown course, while Matthias Kohler beat Karl Mikkelsen by a mere 38 seconds on Green. Matej Sebo, in winning Red, has shown that he has outgrown Junior status and is now regularly outpacing his dad Lubomir.
François Léonard won the Blue course by 1:28 over Dennis Wilkinson with a sprint at the Finish, winning the last 5 legs in a row. François took a surprising short-but-steep route from control 3 to 4, going almost directly over the top of the mountain instead of attempting a lower, contouring route. Nevertheless, Dennis beat him by a almost minute on this leg — hopefully we will see his route choice on RouteGadget.
