We had about 155 people enjoy the first BAOC event of the fall season in moderate, mid-70’s temperatures. Dan Greene set extended Middle-distance courses with some short, technical legs, and some longer legs with more route choice. First-time course-setter Quincy Rosenzweig did an outstanding job designing the White/Yellow/Orange courses, with help from his dad, Eric. Dennis Wildfogel got this day accredited as a National Ranking Event, which helped increase participation, including by Dorn van Dommelen, a visiting geology professor from Alaska. Dan Ingram brought his NJROTC team all the way from Carson City, NV, and a few high school and scout groups also brought several participants each.

Newcomer, and high school cross-country runner, Madison Kiss won the White course in her very first orienteering race, blasting the nearest (Berkeley HS) competitors by over 15 minutes. This win got her so motivated she’s jumping in to do a 3-hour Nax-X at Pacheco (http://www.navxchallenge.com/schedule-1/2018/10/7/pacheco-nav-x-challenge-series) for her second-ever course! Erika Reed, another runner, won the Yellow course by a similar large margin. The Orange course was again dominated by juniors, with Riley Dunn of Carson HS-NJROTC edging out Laurel Larson of BAOC and Kyle Navarro, also of CHS-NJROTC.

The Brown course was taken by our Prez Steve Haas, in tight competition with Dennis Wildfogel and Chuck Spalding. 75-year-old Bob Cooley and 78-year-old Rich Parker came in not far behind in 4th & 5th. On Green, perennial winner Tapio Karras edged out Derek Maclean, despite a nagging leg injury. François Léonard came in just ahead of Vladimir Gusiatnikov on Red; and on Blue, Riley Culberg took top honors over his brother Kevin by 4 minutes. Dennis Wilkinson finished third, still recovering from setting out all the Pacheco Nav-X controls just 2 days before.

The course effort seemed to be designed well, with the top advanced runners finishing in just around 1 hour, with few DNFs. Unfortunately the WYO courses did have several DNFs, partly because Orange was a little more difficult than usual, and because several White & Yellow competitors did not realize they needed to punch the end of the finish chute.

After the race, the Culberg brothers jumped in to do a much-appreciated course review for the Carson HS-NJROTC team. And thanks to Dan Greene for driving in to pick up a tired, dehydrated competitor from the Brown course.
