What motivates you to volunteer, or what prevents you?
#Response DateResponse Text
Oct 23, 2009 12:44 AMI can't come out and depend on everyone else to keep the events running smoothly - that's terribly selfish! The fact that BAOC seems to me to have its events very well organized makes it easy to volunteer. Another way to look at it is that orienteering gives me a chance to do something I can't do anywhere else - go off trail, get exercise, even train for events as my busy schedule allows, and it gets me out into the wilderness regularly. I have to imagine that most of the other orienteers feel similarly, and I'm happy to help other people, especially new orienteers, have that unique and invaluable time in the woods.
Oct 23, 2009 8:00 PMfamily commitments discourage me due to lack of childcare Low travel time and cooler weather are important.
Oct 23, 2009 8:21 PMfell of right thing to do
Oct 23, 2009 8:23 PMLimited time, family that don't share interest
Oct 23, 2009 8:24 PMWe always need volunteers and I'm happy to help if my schedule allows. When I am the event director so many people help out so I want to help other people when they are putting on their events.
Oct 23, 2009 8:52 PMContinuing the mission of the club. Time.
Oct 23, 2009 10:10 PMSomeone's got to do it.
Oct 23, 2009 10:10 PMI like O events, and if we don't have volunteers, we don't have events.
Oct 23, 2009 10:23 PMappreciation.
Oct 23, 2009 10:29 PMMotivation: Everyone has to do it, or we would have no club Prevents me: Too time consuming
Oct 23, 2009 11:27 PMThe Club and its people are great, so I am happy to help. The lack of time prevents me from helping more.

Oct 24, 2009 1:34 AMMotivates: Keep the club going Prevents: Family obligtions
Oct 24, 2009 1:58 AMSense of community
Oct 24, 2009 2:03 AMI live so far away, it is usually 3 1/2 hrs. minimum drive. It is too full a day with 7 hours of driving to get there early or stay late, sorry.

Oct 24, 2009 3:12 PMFree time either way
Oct 24, 2009 4:34 PMduty motivates me
Oct 25, 2009 6:18 AMmotivation: fun, sense of duty prevention: too tired after event to pick up controls, and large time investment for ED & CS
Oct 25, 2009 1:50 PMguilt (or desire to contribute) motivates; busy life and schedule and need to get back home prevents.
Oct 26, 2009 1:57 AMJust beginning and don't know people in the group yet.
Oct 26, 2009 10:41 PMI like to do my part for the benefit of the club. Anytime I volunteer my time and plan my day around volunteering and it is not needed, keeps me from volunteering more regularly.
Oct 28, 2009 1:02 AMmotivates: help the sport I love prevents: time, often cuts in your own orienteering time (while control pickup actually extends it): i need 3 hours to reliably finish my course (including walking to remote start, recover after finish).
Oct 28, 2009 2:04 AMWant to help the club and the sport.
Oct 28, 2009 4:22 AMDon't understand English well
Nov 2, 2009 1:34 AMmotivates - feeling of community, belonging, obligation prevents - time, family, schedule conflicts
Nov 2, 2009 8:07 PMcontribution to the community
Nov 2, 2009 8:20 PMWeekend time is increasingly precious
Nov 2, 2009 10:09 PMfamily time prevents me
Nov 9, 2009 5:32 PMMotivated by guilt(sort of joking , mostly because I enjoy orienteering so much I know I need to so my share so so we can have frequent events. I would like to do mnore but soemtimes it can be hard to find the time on a Sunday to do a course and stay around afterwords to help as a lot of social and work conflicts.
Nov 11, 2009 5:49 AMMotivation: Wanting to do my part to make O thrive. Prevents: Other obligations, young kids
Nov 11, 2009 5:57 AMPeer pressure, desire to help, and desire try new things out
Nov 11, 2009 6:16 AMGiving back to the club motivates me to volunteer
Nov 11, 2009 7:26 AMMotivation: wanting to do my share.
Nov 11, 2009 4:37 PMMotivate: Help organizing events I am happy to participate myself, fun to set courses Prohibit: Time constraints
Nov 11, 2009 10:31 PMHelping the cause of BAOC and orienteering in general.
Nov 12, 2009 2:32 AMSocial aspects, but more importantly, it doesn't happn without volunteers.
Nov 12, 2009 5:01 AMsense of duty
Nov 12, 2009 4:28 PMIt is the duty of all members in a volunteer organization.
Nov 13, 2009 6:09 PMLike to socialize and contribute. If I don't do it then why should I expect others, and I need others to volunteer if there're to be any events.
Nov 13, 2009 6:30 PMThe only way we can have quality events is if we all pitch in and get the job done. I don't feel I could belong to the club if I did not contribute.
Nov 13, 2009 7:21 PMBeing asked at an event, if I have time
Nov 14, 2009 3:02 AMWe live too far away (5 to 6 hour round trip) to be able to voluntee,r plus we have to shadow our kids.
Nov 16, 2009 12:18 AMIt's usually time pressure which prevents me from volunteering more. I do volunteer because some jobs are a lot of fun, I get to meet more people in a comfortable setting, and I believe that running the club has to be a shared responsibility.
Nov 16, 2009 12:22 AMI don't want to socialize much.
Nov 16, 2009 1:07 AMfun to do, giving back to the rest of the volunteers
Nov 16, 2009 1:46 AMI understand the club can only put on as many events as it does if we all contribute. I like the volume and variety of events, so I try to do my share.
Nov 16, 2009 6:15 AMIt is usually a 7 hr. drive (round trip) for me to get to the Bay area, so arriving early or staying late is not very workable. Whenever I have volunteered for starts, the times don't work out, I end up having to cut my course short (which messes up the reason for being there).
Nov 16, 2009 9:44 PMIf none of us volunteered, what would happen? I'm really enthusiastic about the activity, so I want to help make it happen in any way. I usually tell meet directors to plug me in where needed.
Nov 17, 2009 12:11 AMmotivates: someone asks personally for help prevents: lack of knowledge on how to do more advance support and lack of time
Nov 17, 2009 1:53 AMI usually orienteer with my son. I want to talk with
Nov 17, 2009 5:28 AMInteract with people, get more out of a Sunday afternoon in terms of exercise (pick-up).
Nov 17, 2009 4:41 PMI am motivated to volunteer but I don't have the time now. In a few years I hope to be doing a lot more
Nov 18, 2009 3:32 AMHaving 3 kids in school fills up my weekends pretty well, so I rarely get to do anything that is just for me. On the upside I do get to take my kids orienteering occasionally.
Nov 24, 2009 3:52 AMBurnout and lack of physical ability.
Nov 24, 2009 7:04 AMMotivates: socializing, helping the sport function. Prevents: time!
Nov 24, 2009 9:58 PMMotivates: Putting on a good event. Other's enjoyment of the event. Helping other volunteers. Prevents: Personal time limitations. Seemingly unnecessary, or over staffed jobs (rarely an issue).
Nov 24, 2009 11:39 PMMotivates: desire to help out/give back Not: so far away - don't want to spend whole day away from my family...
Nov 25, 2009 2:15 AMNot that much into orienteering
Nov 26, 2009 7:19 AMIn the past I have always had a group of students to monitor. Now, probably because I'd rather participate.
Nov 27, 2009 9:18 PMI think volunteering would be a neat way to get to know people, but I don't have my own transportation to get there early enough. Also, I've only been to two events and I'd like to get a better idea of what's going on before I volunteer.
Dec 1, 2009 4:33 PMYoung children at home
Dec 2, 2009 5:05 AMbon tempe volunteer course! Being part of the club.
Dec 5, 2009 10:57 PMMotivates: having directed an event before, knowing how hard it is to get reliable volunteers, and knowing how much I'm appreciated for ANY small effort I contribute. Prevents: time constraints
Dec 6, 2009 4:31 AMI generally try to help out in some way (usually control pick-up) because I appreciate all the hard work that goes into these events.
Dec 7, 2009 5:47 PMSocial aspects, additional experience
Dec 7, 2009 6:39 PMSince I travel from Sac, I like to leave the Bay as early as possible to beat traffic home.
Dec 8, 2009 3:33 AMBelonging, doing my share. Sometimes need to get home for other commitments.
Dec 8, 2009 4:59 AMIt motivates me to know the needs at the event. Ask or put up a sign up sheet with listed jobs.
Dec 9, 2009 11:46 PMMotivation: Give back to the club, provide a good event for peers - Preventing: Time commitment, risk for burnout
Dec 10, 2009 5:54 AMSense of duty motivates me, time prevents me.
Dec 10, 2009 6:24 AMTime and ability
Dec 10, 2009 3:13 PMNon-monetary compensation, such as free event entry, quite motivates me.
Dec 10, 2009 3:22 PMRest/recovery (injury) days. Lack of money to actually participate PCTR gives a coupon that can be used toward another event or merchandise). Sometimes I go early to an event, help set up and then run in the event, or stay after running one to help out. Just because.
Dec 11, 2009 4:43 AMSharing the effort to set up/clear up.
Dec 11, 2009 10:22 PMEverybody needs to pitch in, but I volunteer less than before due to family conflicts
Dec 12, 2009 7:01 PMlike i said above... i'm not old enough!
Dec 12, 2009 9:50 PMI learn more about the sport.
Dec 13, 2009 5:34 AMVolunteering is fun. Being busy, having carpool/travel constraints, and wanting to have plenty of time to prepare, run, and socialize keep me from doing it more.
Dec 13, 2009 7:46 AMMotivation: Tasks need to be done in order for there to be events. Prevention: Assuming somebody else will do the tasks I don't enjoy (i.e., so I don't need to do them).
