Event Write-Up
By
Coyote Lake Harvey Bear Ranch County Park is a huge (27 sq km) recreation area situated on both sides of a long ridge rising on the eastern flank of the Santa Clara Valley. BAOC has held several events over the years on the eastern (Coyote Lake) side of the park. This year, the club opted to use the western (Harvey Bear) side as a change of pace.
While the Harvey Bear side has some advantages (primarily a considerably shorter drive), it has one compelling disadvantage: parking and other facilities are too limited for a large group event on a weekend, as the park is heavily used by South Bay residents. Fortunately, because of the exceptionally dry winter, the rangers were able to grant us use of a large empty field for our parking and assembly area. In a typical winter, the field would be too marshy to use. The moral of the story is that the club will be back on the Coyote Lake side of the park in the future, and the rangers will be happy to accommodate us there.
I extend heartfelt thanks to the many volunteers who had a part in making a very successful day of orienteering.

Special thanks also to ranger Gina Ellis, whose cooperation and assistance were invaluable.
Lubomir Šebo designed an excellent set of courses, using the best terrain in Harvey Bear, and the only really appropriate trail loop for beginner courses. This necessitated a very remote Start and Finish (each over 2 km from the assembly area).
There were more than 180 participants, with large contingents from both the Turlock and Carson NJROTC units prepping for their upcoming national championship event.
The complete results are below, but here are the highlights:
- Xander Mann had an impressive win on the White course.
- Cadets Josef Estrada of Carson NJROTC and Luke Hansen of Turlock NJROTC were the victors on Yellow and Orange, respectively.
- Wayne Staats, after finishing the Blue course, ran Brown as a second course and had by far the fastest time there. (Wayne also helped with control pickup—remember it was over 2 km between the assembly area and the Start/Finish each time!) Dennis Wildfogel was the "real" victor on Brown, with Penny DeMoss in second.
- Green and Red were fairly close contests, with Tapio Karras leading Steve Gregg on Green, and Graham Brew ahead of Syd Reader on Red—both races with margins under four minutes.
- National Team member Anthony Riley breezed to victory on Blue.
Lost and Found
A pair of 2.00 reading glasses with a black frame was left on the water bottle table at the assembly area. If they belong to you, tell .
- That reminds me that a standard (not thumb) compass was left behind at the St. Mary's College event last October. I kept it somewhere safe and totally forgot about it until now. The registration crew did not think it looked like a rental. It is pretty worn and has a silver tape embedded behind the 5 cm ruler at the short edge. There is a red string attached to it. Contact me if it's yours.

Comments from E-punch:
- Thanks to Nick Corsano and Lubomir Šebo for putting on this great event on a beautiful day in a new part of this park. A personal thanks to Ann Marie Cody for taking a shift at E-punch so that I could get out on the course after a probably too brief training session. My fault if there were any problems as a result.
- There is one Unknown Runner on Yellow who started at 10:12:36. The start list shows only "Turlock NJROTC". I don't think they came to the E-punch check-in before their run, and we didn't catch it during download. Please let me know who that is.
- Since it's been a while for many of us, and there were a lot of beginners, I'd like to explain the classifications in the results. A DNS stands for Did Not Start. This is usually because the person preregistered but did not show up. At this event, it also means that they were discouraged by the long climb to the start. This happened to a few people with small children.
- If you got an "MP" when you downloaded, but now see "DNF" in the results, this is because the U.S. and international rules are different. International rules, which the results software follow, say that "DNF" is only when you don't punch the Finish, otherwise it's a "MP" for MisPunch. U.S. rules say that "MP" is only when you punch one or more wrong controls (e.g., you punched 83 instead of 51). Otherwise, it's a "DNF". I go through and review this after every event.
- Please tell me if anything needs to be changed.
