The morning overcast and drizzly conditions gave way for partly cloudy and sunny skies by the time the Start opened. The cool temperature, soft ground, and short grasses made for ideal running conditions for our 1-day National Ranking Event (NRE) at Calero County Park.
Course Setter Rich Parker put in significant work for the course design and map corrections, resulting in excellent courses worthy of a National Ranking Event. Due to an unfortunate mishap, one of the Red-course controls was moved to the wrong location on the morning of the event. As a result, a protest was filed, and a jury was sent out to investigate the situation, and eventually, the Red course was voided. Since the misplaced control was used for only the Red course, only 11 runners out of a total of ~185 competitors were impacted by the mishap.
Our events cannot happen without the help of many volunteers. Here are the people who made this event possible—thank you!

Official notice of the voiding of the Red course:
- An official complaint was filed on the placement of control #35 (number 6 on the Red course) at our National Ranking Event held at Calero County Park on Sunday, April 2, 2023. After investigating the control placement on the field, the 3-person Jury concluded that control #35 was misplaced on an unmapped rock feature 50 meters ENE from the control location shown on the map.
- OUSA Competition Rule A.31.13 states:
- When in response to a complaint or protest the organizer or Jury determines that any of the following conditions have existed for a substantial group of competitors in a class, then the class or course shall be voided.
- a. ...
- b. A control flag, the start, or the finish is not within the marked circle or triangle
- c. A control flag is on the wrong feature.
- d. ...
- When in response to a complaint or protest the organizer or Jury determines that any of the following conditions have existed for a substantial group of competitors in a class, then the class or course shall be voided.
- Based upon thorough investigation, the Jury concluded that conditions ‘b’ and ‘c’ existed for all competitors on the Red course. The decision of the Jury is that the Red course be voided.
- I agree with the Jury’s conclusion, which leaves me no option but to void the Red course and all the assigned classes. No results on the Red course will be submitted to OUSA for ranking purposes.

- RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between starting your watch at the start line and leaving the start triangle. The offset can have a huge impact on your route accuracy. For most local events, the offset should be set to 0 as we start from the triangle (assuming you started your watch exactly when you started).
- RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.
