Event Write-Up
By , Event Director (and BAOC Event Coordinator)
The BAOC Score-O event at Huddart Park in Woodside was a huge success! The weather was sunny and warm once the wistful coastal fog burned off, setting us up for a very entertaining day at a location we had not visited for a few years.
Despite what some people thought, this was not the first time BAOC had organized a Score-O. In fact, we used to do them more frequently about 10 years ago when they were called “Wilderness Scrambles”. There is a beauty to the simplicity of the organization, with everyone running on the same map and no predefined courses. Beginners enjoy the flexibility of visiting only the controls they wish, and in any order. Advanced orienteers relish the challenge of optimizing their routing, and in trying to “clear the course” (visit every control) within the time limit.
I think it brings a great sense of comradery across all the competitors when everyone is faced with the same map. And a lot of people were hanging out after their runs discussing routing strategy. We made great use of the shady picnic area. A big thanks to Course Setter Werner Haag for revisiting this format and demonstrating the potential for future events.
A handful of orienteers did clear the course, with Carl Hoel doing it in a mere 66 minutes, with Yurii Konovalenko in second place with 80 minutes. Wayne Staats and Rex Winterbottom also cleared the course within the time limit. Petra Sundstrom was the top female finisher, skipping only two out of the 32 controls. A few orienteers choose to maximize their time on the map by clearing the course without worrying about the time limit. A perfectly valid use of the format so long as you check in by 2 PM.
As ever, the success of the entire enterprise hinges on our wonderful volunteers. For yesterday’s fun we can thank the following:
- Course Setter: Werner Haag
- Registration: Steve Haas, Will Nguyen
- E-Punch: Jeff Lanam, Olga & Gary Kraght
- Beginner Clinics: Rex Winterbottom, Werner Haag
- Starts: Kat Lan, Josh Munic, Ouri Karni
- Control Pick-up: Werner Haag, Tac Sugiyama, Theo Verhoeven, Yurii Konovalenko
- RouteGadget: Tapio Karras
- Website: Chuck Spalding
We are always looking for volunteers to help at all our events. If you would like to pitch in, just contact the Event Director of any future event, and they will happily discuss all the options with you.
Thanks again to everyone who came out to help and participate yesterday!

Thanks to Graham Brew and Werner Haas for a really fun Score-O event! Thanks also to all the volunteers who stepped up to help.
Below are the preliminary results. The point totals may be different from your splits printout — I did not have a setting correct in the software and the penalties were being computed incorrectly.
Neither WinSplits or Attackpoint handle Score-O splits in any useful way, so links to them are not included here. I'll try to find a way to display them somehow. Watch for the RouteGadget link when Tapio gets all the information he needs.
If anything needs to be changed, please tell me () and the webmasters ().

You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=547). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
- In RouteGadget, you can enter your route manually or upload a GPS recording and adjust to fit our map. The following tips apply to the GPS method.
- RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between starting your watch at the Start line and leaving the Start Triangle. The offset can have a significant impact on your route accuracy. For most local events, the offset should be set to 0 as we start from the triangle (assuming you started your watch exactly when you started).
- RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.
