Event Write-Up
By , Event Director
Despite cool, blustery weather with occasional rain showers, some 100 orienteers came to enjoy our return to the Joe Grant North map for the first time since 2015. With the new Lidar contours, and extensive mapping thanks to Misha Kreslavsky, it sure felt like a new venue, even for the old-timers.
RouteGadget was popular among participants, with 22 routes uploaded so far. There is an especially close race among the top-3 finishers on the Blue course. You can enjoy the animation on RouteGadget (https://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=577&cID=1&kieli=). Select the GPS routes for Greg, François, and Mikkel. Then click "Load animation", "View routes, and "Start".

Misplaced Yellow control
We apologize to the Yellow course runners for the misplaced control #5.
The Course Setter originally had the control on a feature close to where the control was hung. Due to the significant growth of poison oak around the original site, the location was moved to a nearby stream bend at the last minute. When the final course map was prepared for printing, the control was accidentally marked on a different stream bend. The control was hung at the stream bend near the original site without checking the final printed map. The lesson learned is that every control site needs to be taped, and the maps, as well as the control sites, must be properly vetted.
Luckily, all the Yellow runners, after stopping their search of the marked site, found the control at the other stream bend some 150 meters further down the trail. Only the very last Yellow finisher of the day mentioned the misplaced control, and pointed out where they had eventually found it. Otherwise, we would not have known anything about the misplacement.
Thank you all for coming!

You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=577). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
- In RouteGadget, you can enter your route manually or upload a GPS recording and adjust to fit our map. The following tips apply to the GPS method.
- RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between starting your watch at the Start line and leaving the Start Triangle. The offset can have a significant impact on your route accuracy. For most local events, you should set the offset to 0 as we start from the triangle (assuming you started your watch exactly when you started).
- RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.
- Comments from the E-Punch Lead:
- A little rain never stopped an orienteer, and the weather made for some enjoyable running in the green hills at Joe Grant (although maybe the afternoon downpours were not ideal for those of us who stayed to vote on bylaw amendments afterwards at the AGM!). Many, many thanks to event director Tapio Karras, course setter Tac Sugiyma, and mapper Misha Kreslavsky for all the work to put on the event. I’d also like to thank Misha for staffing E-Punch while I ran my course, and John Blakkan for arriving early to help with E-Punch setup.
Note that the Yellow course was affected by a misplaced control. - – Phil Lacroute, E-Punch Lead
Please tell and the if anything needs to be changed.
