Event Write-Up
By , Event Director
We had a great day of orienteering at Pacheco State Park as about 70 people braved the chilly temperatures, and made the drive out to this beautiful park, even with one competitor who had come all the way from England. The Green and Red courses were particularly competitive with a lot of very close times.
I want to give a huge shout out to Misha Kreslavsky, possibly the hardest working man in the BAOC at the moment, who not only had to do this event at short notice, after the Huddart Park event was cancelled, but who had also just finished working on the Joe Grant mapping! The one comment I heard more than any other on Sunday was “great course”, and that is a testament to his hard work and expertise.
Thanks to our stalwart registration team of Sarah Williams and Steve Haas with help from Dennis Wildfogel, and to Jeff Lanam and Phil Lacroute for running E-punch. It is very easy to take their efforts for granted, but we are lucky to have such reliable and hard-working crews — it made my job as event director so much easier.
Thanks to Ginny Wailes and Weichun Fong for helping with setup in the early blustery conditions, to Graham Brew and Dan Greene for doing beginner clinics (and even one more-advanced clinic), and to Jeff Kabel for doing the beginner starts.
A few additional shout-outs:
- Ouri Karni – Thanks for the now obligatory poster (plus the one you did for Huddart, too)
- Chuck Spalding – For keeping everything up-to-date and shipshape on the website
- Tapio Karras – For RouteGadget support
- Graham Brew – For ongoing support and advice, especially with the last-minute change of venue
- Nathan Aeschleman – The Pacheco State Park ranger, for approving our permit so quickly and being so friendly and accommodating to the club
Finally, Tac Sugiyama, Matteo Guareschi, Misha Kreslavsky, and I did the control pickup, and then Matteo packed up all the equipment into his car for the next event at the Presidio of San Francisco. See you all there.
Many thanks,
James
Course Setter's Comment
And of course, great thanks to James Arthurton who struggled for the Huddart Park permit, and after the sad failure promptly organized the Pacheco replacement. In addition to dealing with the long Event Director's to-do list, he printed the maps and hauled water to the course, which was a great help!

You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=578). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
- In RouteGadget, you can enter your route manually or upload a GPS recording and adjust to fit our map. The following tips apply to the GPS method.
- RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between starting your watch at the Start line and leaving the Start Triangle. The offset can have a significant impact on your route accuracy. For most local events, you should set the offset to 0 as we start from the triangle (assuming you started your watch exactly when you started).
- RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.
- Comments from the E-Punch Director:
- Thanks to event director James Arthurton and course setter Misha Kreslavsky for a great event in the drizzling rain. It kept the attendance down, along with the remote location, but it didn't dampen the spirits of those who came down (or up in the case of the Turlock NJROTC)!
- – Jeff Lanam, E-Punch Director
Please tell and the if anything needs to be changed.
