Event #5 of 6 in the BAOC 2024 Summer Series

Date: (Sat.) Aug. 3, 2024
Location: Tahoe City, CA
Event Directors: - 415.531.3627, - 415.309.1853
Course Setter: Derek Maclean
Type: C; This is the fifth event of the 2024 Summer Series. Everyone is welcome, including beginners, with free short clinics to explain orienteering.

Please note that fees and time limits apply. Events are typically not canceled due to bad weather.

Be Aware of Road Work on Eastbound I-80 and US-50

Eastbound lanes on I-80 and eastbound US-50 at Enterprise Boulevard to Pioneer Bridge will be reduced to one or two lanes from 10 PM Friday, August 2 until 5 AM Monday, August 5. The Caltrans notice is here (https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-3/d3-news/d3-news-release-24-074c). This Google map (https://maps.app.goo.gl/w3uoYkGEjPbvF3VJ9) shows the affected area (which appears to be only about ½ mile for those going through on I-80).
(Thanks to Rex for pointing this out.)

I hope you have been enjoying the 2024 Summer Series! I have been at three of the events so far, and all have been very fun and challenging. Thanks to the Event Directors, Course Setters, and all the other volunteers required to make these events happen.

We will be returning to the forest for this Event #5 of the 2024 Summer Series at Burton Creek State Park in Tahoe City, California.

We want to emphasize that everyone is welcome to come out and do one (or more) of the courses, regardless of whether or not you attended a previous Summer Series event or plan to attend the final event back in the Bay Area on August 25.
BAOC club membership is not required to participate.
On Sunday, August 4, there will be a National Ranking Event (NRE) with a full suite of courses (i.e., White through Blue) at Little Truckee Summit (north of Truckee). Like this event, that event will be open to everyone: competitive and recreational participants. The webpage for that event is here.

Schedule

  9:00 AM – 11:59 AM: Registration open
9:30 AM – 10:30 AM: Beginner clinics instruction (free)
10:00 AM –   1:30 PM: Starts are open for all courses
3:00 PM: Everyone must have returned to the Finish
Note that day-of-event registration will still close at noon. Thus, to take advantage of the late start window, you should be pre-registered online or have registered for the Summer Series Discount Package (which includes this event).

At registration, all juniors (i.e., under 21) must be accompanied by parents or legal guardians, or bring with them a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian (the registration form is available here (PDF/12KB)).

Note that you can register and start on courses anytime during the open times above. Thus, for example, you do not need to be "punctual" at 9:00 (but you can if you want, but please don't show up earlier and expect to be served).

Beginner clinics are 15–20 minute, repeating sessions that introduce the sport of orienteering, and provide enough instruction to be able to complete the Beginner course.

Note: Beginners are given their Beginner-course maps at registration. You should get your map before joining a beginner clinic.

Note that everyone must return to the Finish by 3:00 PM, and then promptly go to the download tent, even if they have not completed their course. Please do not leave without checking in! If there are unaccounted people after 3:00, we must initiate a search for them.

After you finish, stick around and socialize with other participants! Beginners should use this opportunity to ask any questions they have.

Costs and Registration

Note: There is a special Summer Series Discount Package for BAOC members. Look here for the details. You will not need to register for this event if you have registered for the Summer Series Discount Package.

The following fees apply at this event:

$3 for each junior on the Beginner course
$8 for each adult on the Beginner course
$5 for each junior on the Short or Long course
$15 for each adult member on the Short or Long course
$20 for each adult non-member on the Short or Long course
$1 for a compass rental (optional)
$5 for an E-punch fingerstick rental (if you don't own one; each group will need one to complete their course)
$15 (and up) for one-year BAOC membership (optional)
Notes:
  • At the event, we can accept payment by cash, check, or credit/debit card (but no electronic payments — e.g., PayPal, Venmo).
  • Individual entrants can register at the event or online before the event (see below).
  • Groups going on a course together must register at the event. (The online registration system can't deal with groups. 🙁)
  • Juniors are age 8 through 20 (under age 8 is free).
  • There is no charge for a second course (but you must end up paying for the more expensive course—i.e., Intermediate or Advanced after Beginner).
  • Members of other orienteering clubs can pay the "member" fee. (We hope your club would do the same for our members. 🙂)

More information about event pricing is available in the club FAQ. All the prices are also shown on the standard entry form (PDF/12KB), which you can print and fill out in advance to save some time at the event. (You will need one entry form for each group of people going on a course together.)

Optional Online Registration

Online registration has closed, but you can still register at the event.

Notes:
  • Online registration is not required—you can register at the event.
  • You can see who is registered here (https://eventreg.orienteeringusa.org/eventregister/reglist/home/tahoe2024) (but keep in mind that others will register at the event).

What to Bring

For the Beginner course, comfortable outdoors attire and shoes are fine.

For the Short and Long courses, leg cover or gaiters are recommended, as well as shoes with some extra grip on the sole.

A compass is not absolutely necessary, but can be helpful, and thus is recommended. We have compasses available for a $1 rental fee.

We time the courses with the SPORTident system, so each entry/team needs to have a SPORTident E-punch fingerstick. If you don't have your own, you can rent one at registration for $5. (Use of the "E-punch" system is easy. You can learn how at the event, or read about it here.)

Courses

Here are the course details. Be sure to read the Course Setter's Notes for more information.

    Course Length Climb Controls
    Beginner 2.4 km 40 m 8
    Short 3.6 km 50 m 13
    Long 5.6 km 70 m 13

Notes:
  • Please follow the marked route when walking to the Start.
  • Maps for the Beginner course are given out at registration, and can be looked at before starting the course.
  • Maps for the Short and Long courses are provided at the Start, and must not be looked at before starting the course.

The Short and Long courses will be the ranking courses for the respective Summer Series.

Keep in mind that you can earn Summer Series points from the first course you run at the event, and only if it's one of the ranking courses. That is, you will not earn points if you run the Beginner course first, and then one of the ranking courses.

Venue Facilities

Due to ongoing construction at the high school, there might not be restrooms at the assembly area. There will be a porta-potty near the Start.

Water might be available at the assembly area (TBD).

2024 Summer Series

This is the fifth event of the BAOC 2024 Summer Series. The Series consists of six events, each of which has two "ranking courses" for the overall "Short" and "Long" Summer Series results. At this event, points will be awarded to all the individuals (but not groups or teams) who complete the Short or Long course (as their first course at the event).

Scoring of the Summer series events involves a gender/age-based weighting system. Details of the Summer Series scoring system are available here. (Note that we need your gender and birth year if you want to be scored properly.)

Request for Volunteers

Thank you to those who have volunteered so far. If you plan on coming to the event, I hope you can spare an hour or so to keep everyone's volunteer commitment to a minimum. We still need some of the usual volunteers:

Please let me know if you can help, and your desired role. I'll see you in the woods!

Thanks,
Deron van Hoff, the Regional Event Cordinator ()

Driving Directions

Parking will be at North Tahoe High School, which we have used several times in the past. The approximate coordinates for the assembly area are 39.1940,-120.1193.

From Tahoe City: Take CA Route 28 northeast for ~3.7 kilometers (Hey, we're orienteers and should know metric! OK, if I must, ~2.3 miles.), and turn left onto Old Mill Road. Head north on Old Mill Road for ~600 meters (0.4 miles) until reaching the three-way stop at Polaris Road. Turn left and proceed ~800 meters (0.5 miles) to the school on the right. Turn in at the first driveway. (If you miss Old Mill Road, just keep going on Highway 28, and look for signs at Fabian Way pointing to cross-country skiing—see below.)

From Kings Beach: Take CA Route 28 west for ~10.8 kilometers (~6.7 miles), and turn right onto Fabian Way (across from the 7-Eleven). Turn right onto Village Road (first intersection: ~130 meters, ~400 feet). Head north on Village Road for ~300 meters (0.2 miles), and turn left onto Polaris Road. Proceed ~1.1 kilometers (0.7 miles) to the school on the right. Turn in at the first driveway. (If you miss Fabian Way, just keep going on Highway 28, and look carefully for signs for Old Mill Road on the right—see above.)
