Map & Terrain
Little Truckee Summit is mostly thin, runnable pine forest with a few large meadows and many small clearings. Some of the advanced courses may encounter thicker forest with deadfall. All water features are dry this time of year.
Many boulders, cliffs, and rocky areas dot the landscape, providing useful point features for course setting. Mapped boulders are generally 1 meter high or higher, although some smaller ones are mapped in areas with few boulders.
The map is criss-crossed with many roads, paths, and rides in various states of disrepair. Some paths are extremely visible, and others have begun to fade into disuse. I've tried to update the map in as many places as possible, but you may encounter paths that are mapped as more visible than they actually are. Many rides are mapped — old logging paths that often just show up as a distinct break in the tree line. Rides are useful in many places as handrails, but may be runnable or overgrown.
Across the entire map, many meadows have overgrown with low underbrush and small pine saplings resembling "Christmas trees". These are still marked as open land on the map. Some of these meadows now have lower visibility and lower running speed than the surrounding (white) forest — please take this into account when planning route choice.
Parts of the southern forested area near the Finish have been thinned and cleared of underbrush, with large piles of chopped tree trunks and branches dotting the forest. None of these ~2–3 m high woodpiles are mapped.
Course Notes
This is a Classic event — the courses have been set to OUSA Classic standards. On the advanced courses, you'll encounter a mix of both highly-technical navigation and route choice. The longer advanced courses visit a variety of terrain types, each requiring different navigation techniques. There is an Ochre (Short Brown) course available if you want a very short, but highly technical, course.
I've tried to make the courses as distinct as possible from the NAOC/Cal-O-Fest 2023 (https://www.cal-o-fest.com/stage_05) courses. Many of the same areas are used, just a little differently.
The same Start and Finish are used for all the courses.
- The Start is about 2 km away from the parking area, along a flat, well-maintained dirt road. Please make sure you allow adequate time to get to the Start before it closes at 12:30.
- There are no restrooms at the Start.
- The Finish is about 0.3 km away from the parking area.
The White, Yellow, Ochre, and Brown courses are printed at 1:7,500 scale. The Orange, Green, Red, and Blue courses are printed at 1:10,000. The contour interval is 5 meters.
The Red and Blue courses will have a map flip at some point during the course (these courses are printed across two sheets of paper, which will be placed in a map case back-to-back).
The course statistics, pending minor revisions, are:
Water Course Distance Climb Controls stops Navigation White 2.3 km 110 m 10 0 Beginner Yellow 2.7 km 100 m 9 0 Adv. Beginner Orange 4.2 km 150 m 9 1 Intermediate Ochre 2.8 km 90 m 10 1 Advanced Brown 4.0 km 110 m 14 1 Advanced Green 5.5 km 140 m 16 1 Advanced Red 7.8 km 260 m 15 3 Advanced Blue 9.4 km 290 m 23 3 Advanced
White-course participants will need to follow marked routes at two legs in their course. These routes will be very clearly marked in the terrain with pink streamers. One of these routes will highlight a very indistinct ride (an old logging path) that's fallen into disrepair. The other marked route will cross open forest in between two controls.
Some of the water stops will not be at controls. To make the jobs of event staff easier, we've decided to place some water stops at obvious locations on trails, in places that don't restrict route choice. These will be marked with a large, pink, "cup" symbol on your maps (the standard symbol for a refreshment station). The Orange, Green, Red, and Blue courses will have these water stops. The Red and Blue courses will also have a water stop at a control. Brown and Ochre will have only one water stop, at a control. The White and Yellow courses do not have water stops. We will provide water and cups at the Start.
I would also like to remind all runners to carefully read the map when approaching a control. Remember that not all of the controls you see will be on your course, so remember to always check the control code before punching.
