Course Setter's Notes

By Wayne Staats

Welcome to the 4th event in the BAOC 2024 Summer Series! This course is designed to challenge your navigation skills while exploring one of the most iconic campuses in the United States.

I hope you have fun and good luck! Enjoy exploring UC Berkeley while testing your orienteering skills. Whether you're doing the Beginner, Short, or Long course, there's a challenge suited for every level of experience. We encourage beginners to attend this event — the map has a lot of distinct buildings and features that make for a very approachable and interesting first orienteering experience.

Location on the UC Berkeley Campus

Registration is in the usual place, the Social Sciences Building (formerly Barrows Hall), which is located on the south side of the campus, near Bancroft Way, and near Sather Gate and Sproul Plaza.

The Start and Finish are very close to registration.

Map

The map has been updated and field checked this week by Matej Sebo, reflecting many changes since last year due to the ever-changing construction on the campus. The map is accurate as of Wednesday, July 17, but we still must be aware that construction areas can always change suddenly.

Out-of-bounds areas are indicated on the map — they must not be entered. As François pointed out in the Course Setter’s Notes for the Diablo Valley College event two weeks ago:

Be aware that the North lines are not parallel to the edges of the paper.

Safety

Stay aware of cars, cyclists, and pedestrians on campus roads and paths, particularly when you are rounding blind corners.

Obey all signs and respect campus regulations.

Course Details

    Course Length Climb Controls
    Beginner ~2.4 km 55 m 11
    Short ~4.8 km 85 m 16
    Long ~7.3 km 115 m 20

The course lengths are for the "best-route" (i.e., as normally given for Sprint courses), not the "straight-line" distance that is specified for non-Sprint courses.
The climb numbers represent the amount of ascending that would be done on the "optimum route" (in the Course Setter's opinion), without regard for any descending.
The Short and Long courses will be the ranking courses for the respective Summer Series.
Keep in mind that you can earn Summer Series points from the first course you run at the event, and only if it's one of the ranking courses. That is, you will not earn points if you run the Beginner course first, and then one of the ranking courses.

Water

There will be no water stations on the course. Please bring your own water if you anticipate needing it during the course.
